May 2023- Applicants to complete vetting, medical, fitness, toxicology, DNA, fingerprints etc.
August 2023- Final offer of employment & Course enrolment
September 2023- Start date

Working as a City Police Officer is an exciting and rewarding career. You will endeavour to provide a reassuring presence and protect the public as well as prevent and investigate crimes committed within the business and residential communities. It can be a challenging and unpredictable job with no two days ever the same but it's also incredibly fulfilling and rewarding.
Policing will enable you to work in partnership with the public and other organisations and make a difference to the local community. You will have a key role in supporting victims and witnesses and providing reassurance to individuals who have been subjected to crime and anti-social behaviour.
As a Police Officer with the City of London Police, you will:
- Come face to face with the community every day
- Attend emergency and non-emergency calls
- Take statements from members of the public
- Prepare reports
- Investigate crimes and offences
- Conduct searches
- Make arrests and attend incidents.

Eligibility for all Applicants:
All applicants must:
- Be 17 years old or over. There is no upper age limit. You can start the application process if you are 17 years old, but you must have reached 18 years to start your training.
- Residency: We do not have specific London Residency criteria and would welcome all eligible candidates across UK. You must however have resided in the United Kingdom for a minimum of three years prior to applying.
- Nationality: If you're from outside the EEA, it is essential that you have leave to remain in the UK for an indefinite period. If you are from within the EEA and not a British national you will still require proof for an indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
- Have no criminal convictions.
- Be able to pass the Medical assessment including eyesight standards, Fitness test, DNA, Fingerprints and Substance Misuse Testing.
- Pass the police vetting checks.
- Comply with the Force tattoo policy.
- Driving license (not mandatory but desirable).
Entry Routes - there are 4 entry routes to becoming a Police Officer with City of London Police:
- Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship Scheme (PCDA)-If you want to work towards a degree, and hold a minimum level 3 qualification (2 A-Level grade A*-C or equivalent). In addition, you must hold a level 2 qualification in English Language at a GCSE grade C or above, or grades 4-9. If you do not have this qualification, we will also consider an English Language equivalent overseas qualification.
- Police Constable Graduate Entry Programme (DHEP)- For applicants who already have a degree.
- Professional Policing Degree Pre-Join Pathway- For Graduates of the Professional Policing BSc degree only
- Detective Constable Graduate Entry Programme (Detective DHEP)- The 2 year Detective Degree Holder Entry Programme is aimed at those who have an undergraduate degree in any subject. You will work towards a Graduate Diploma in Professional Policing Practice whilst you train as a Police Officer, making a difference to City of London’s communities. You will also sit the National Investigators’ Examination to become a fully accredited Detective. You will be employed as a Police Officer from day one, the course combines practical “on the job” training with academic learning, allowing you to ‘earn while you learn’.
All tuition fees for above programmes will be paid for by the City of London Police.
N.B. We will identify your entry pathway for you depending on your eligibility.
Applicants without any Level 3 qualifications (A-Levels or equivalent) can be considered if they are:
- Serving, or previously served as a substantive Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) or Special Constable with any force and have independent patrol status (IPS). Previous service is a minimum of 18 months service and left no longer than 18 months ago.
- Previously served in the military, armed forces or similar law enforcement agency, have successfully completed the minimum term of service and have an exemplary reference (previous service in military or armed forces is a minimum of two years within the last five years).
- They have previous work experience that can demonstrate transferable skills relevant to the role of a Police Constable.
- Gained a Certificate in Knowledge of Policing previously.
For DHEP candidates, if you hold an overseas degree you will also need to hold a functional level two English qualification.

Recruitment and Selection Policy

Police Barred and Advisory lists
Individuals placed on the Police Barred and Advisory lists will not be considered for employment by the police for a minimum of 5 years from the date of listing in the case of gross misconduct, or 3 years from the date of listing in the case of poor performance.
